Designated Safeguarding Lead (officer)
This course meets the training requirements for designated safeguarding leads and is suitable for both new and experienced DSLs. The training will provide an overview of the current law and statutory guidance, including the quality care standards and Ofsted expectations. Delegates will have the opportunity to explore some of the more specific safeguarding issues and how to develop a strategic and preventative response to safeguarding children.
This is an interactive 1-day course with a variety of activities and group discussions throughout the day. Safeguarding leads will feel confident about the expectations on their role and will leave with practical ideas about how to implement and secure effective safeguarding arrangements in their setting.
Course Outline:
· Outline of current law and legislation including Ofsted’s expectations
· Applying the thematic learning from research and safeguarding practice reviews.
· Using data to inform a strategic and preventative approach.
· Building empathy and understanding through exploring the journey of a child who is looked after.
· Responding to specific needs and harms and understanding the impact of trauma and abuse.
· Exploring the theories behind grooming and how to identify grooming behaviours inside and outside of the home.
· An overview of online safety and filtering and monitoring systems.
· Child-on-child abuse; managing incidents of nude or semi-nude images and harmful sexual behaviour.
· Safeguarding vulnerable children and children with SEND.
· Creating a culture of listening and how to respond to disclosures in line with achieving best evidence principles and child centred approaches.
· Understanding and assessing risk using approaches such as signs of safety and contextual safeguarding.
· Effective information sharing and record-keeping systems.
· Engaging with children and families and contributing to multi-agency working.
· Creating a safe culture, embedding safer working practices and understanding how to manage allegations and low-level concerns.
· Considering the power of language and good practice examples in children’s homes.
· The importance of reflective practice and supervision.
This is a one-day course delivered both virtually and face to face throughout the year. Alternatively, we can come to you and deliver the course just for your organisation, virtually, or at a venue of your choice. Delegates will receive a certificate of attendance upon successful completion.
